Mark Conselyea, a recent graduate of Carver High School, is on his way to FAMU for his freshman year of college. Having applied for and received numerous scholarships, Mark’s tuition was covered. Or so he thought, until he received a call from the school that they were still waiting for his housing deposit. After 3 phone calls to supporters, Mark received a call from Deborah Lum, Executive Director of Atlanta Workforce Development Agency, asking where to send the check.
Mark’s situation is one that is representative of what The Mayor’s Youth Program is able to do for Atlanta City youth. The program focuses on the un-met needs of students who need assistance following their post high school dreams. Mark’s dream is to play percussion for the infamous FAMU marching band. He also plans to major in English and go pre-law with the hopes of living abroad one day.
“Paying for college is not always about tuition. I received many scholarships, and paying for college was not going to be a problem-- however, my housing deposit had not been paid. The Mayor's Youth Program found out about my situation, and had it resolved within 48 hours. Without the MYP, all my hard work and preparation for college may have been for naught. The MYP truly understands that every student's situation may be different, and can help support students no matter what the need may be.”
